Three papers opened their doors on a cool but sunny spring day in Thistleville. CW McGregor, Angela Loungechair, and Charles Duckford sat at their respective chief editor’s desks at the three papers. The rush to get their papers out for the long, Thistleville dam-day weekend, was on.

On Friday, neither CW McGregor nor Angela Loungechair could populate a whole paper because of underinvestment in the newsroom. White space dominated the front page and readers were perturbed by the blank-ness. CW hired 3 news beavers to take up the slack. The three promptly slapped each other’s tails and scandalous gossip about the state of CW’s newsroom was the talk of the town by Saturday morning.

On Saturday, her advertisers, disturbed by the Friday-night shenanigans in CW’s newsroom pulled all of their ads from the Saturday edition. Frantic to win back her advertisers she promised changes and that the offending beavers would be dam-well be sacked. On Sunday, many of CW’s advertisers returned. The damage, however, was done and her paper did not remain financially viable and shut the doors of the news room forever on Sunday night.

Angela, recovered on Saturday by putting together a perfectly fine paper with colourful photos and a lovely layout. But her team found it difficult to branch out beyond the business focus and the lack of balance led to a lack of people purchasing her paper. Nevertheless she persisted and put together the strongest paper of the weekend on Sunday – too little, too late.

The Evening Hoot, Charles Duckford’s paper, saw exceptional revenue on Friday and Saturday with sales numbers to match. But the content floundered on Sunday. The newsroom was not prepared and could not keep the front page articles in order. Several had to be pulled at the last minute. Additionally, the paper was negative, dark, dreary, and miserable, and so were Sunday sales. The Sunday failure was not enough to undo a solid two-day effort and The Evening Hoot was the victorious paper. Good work Charles!

This week saw a Bridgehead light roast, weird, and the news editors frantically nibbled on nuts and potato chips at their desks.
